Cowboy Campfire with Second Grade

Our second graders have been studying the life of the cowboy.  This unit culminated with a Cowboy Campfire!

Miss Clark is such a great teacher!  She goes the extra mile to create a wonderful learning environment.  For the past couple of weeks, students have had cowboy hats to wear when they were doing their schoolwork and had bandanas tied to their chairs.  I visited the classroom and was able to hear the class as they learned our state song, "Texas, Our Texas."

Students read and wrote about the life of a cowboy.

The cowboy unit culminated with the Cowboy Campfire!

Funny story:  The morning of the Cowboy Campfire, I asked the second graders what event they were looking most forward to.  They told me they were having a surprise REAL cowboy come to read them a book....Hummm....I knew that the "cowboy" coming was our own Head of School, Dr. Larry Taylor.  Dr. Taylor is a lot of great things, but I'm not sure I would call him a "real cowboy!"  Anyway, he was a great sport, donning his cowboy hat and fake mustache, helping the students have a rip-roaring good time. He read a children's classic, Barnyard Dance by Sarah Boynton, and encouraged the students to actively participate in their own barnyard dance.  To these second graders, a "real cowboy" had read them a story, plus brought a lot of fun to the Cowboy Campfire!

With the help of some great parents, students enjoyed a bowl of chili while sitting around western themed tables.

What a fun day!  Thanks, Dr. Taylor, Miss Clark, and all of the parent volunteers for helping us create memories and new traditions at PCA North!
