Favorite Parenting Books
Since I often recommend parenting books and resources, I thought it would be helpful to put them here in one place! I'm sure this will be an ongoing list, so check back often. While most of my favorites are tried and true classics, occasionally, I add to my list.
I am sharing the Amazon link to the books since you are allowed to "look inside" most books, read a sample, and see if it meets your needs. However, most books may be found at local bookstores such as Mardel or Barnes and Noble. If you are in the Dallas area, the Prestonwood Bookstore, located at the Plano location, has many of these books in addition to other fabulous parenting resources.
Running with the Horses
http://www.amazon.com/Running-Horses-Parenting-Children-Servant-Leaders/dp/1490808515/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1408199341&sr=1-2&keywords=running+with+the+horses
Ok...Yes, Dr. Taylor is my "boss." However, his book, Running with the Horses, really does make it to the top of my list. What I love about working for Dr. Larry Taylor is his intentionality. He's deliberate. There is a plan. Always! Through his book, Running with the Horses, and also his parenting class, Kingdom Family, he disciples parents, teaching them how to be purposeful in their God-given role as parents. Dr. Taylor and his wife, Delinda, are parents to four grown young men. I first met these young men when they were boys in kindergarten, 2nd grade, 4th grade, and 6th grade. They are well-rounded, mature young men. Dr. Taylor disciples parents, based on biblical principles and gives practical suggestions, sharing things he and Delinda did as parents. For this couple, the proof is in the pudding!
Raising Kids for True Greatness by Dr.Tim Kimmel
http://www.amazon.com/Raising-Kids-True-Greatness-Redefine/dp/0849909511/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348009057&sr=8-1&keywords=parenting+kids+for+true+greatness
I love anything by Dr. Tim Kimmel! His book Grace Based Parenting is a classic! Raising Kids for True Greatness has it right, in my opinion. Dr. Kimmel dares to ask the question: Are we raising kids for success or for true greatness? Here's the first paragraph of the book:
Many parents are so busy preparing their children for success that they miss the chance to equip them to do something truly extraordinary. Somewhere along the way, they've taken a wrong turn in their thinking and are pointing their children toward misdirected goals.
The 5 Love Languages of Kids by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell
http://www.amazon.com/The-5-Love-Languages-Children/dp/0802403476/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373239963&sr=8-1&keywords=five+love+languages+of+children
The 5 Love Languages books are classics. I particularly like this book concerning understanding our children's love language. So often we parent according to our own love language. Children respond and feel the greatest love when we parent according to their God-given bent. Speaking their "love language" is one of way we can do this. This book teaches readers about the five love languages, tells how to determine your child's love language, and even how to discipline according to this love language.
You Can't Make Me (But I Can Be Persuaded): Strategies for Bringing Out the Best in Your Strong-Willed Child by Cynthia Tobias
http://www.amazon.com/You-Cant-Make-Persuaded-Strong-Willed/dp/1578561930/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348010122&sr=1-1&keywords=you+can%27t+make+me+tobias
This is my favorite book for parents of strong-willed children. It helps parents understand their child's basic, God-given nature. This book explains the BLESSING of having a strong-willed child, while helping raise a child who can comply with the rules set forth by society.
Here's a paragraph from one of the first few pages of the book:
Being strong-willed does not have to be a negative trait. I often remind parents of strong-willed children that their children may change the world - after all, it's not likely the world is going to change them! Your strong-willed child may be God's instrument for making the world a better place. It is a great gift to have a child with firm convictions, a high spirit, a sense of adventure.
From Innocence to Entitlement: A Love and Logic Cure for the Tragedy of Entitlement by Jim Faye and Dawn Billings
http://www.amazon.com/Innocence-Entitlement-Love-Logic-Tragedy/dp/1930429746/ref=sr_1_12?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348010890&sr=1-12&keywords=parenting+with+love+and+logic
I am a fan of all books in the Love and Logic series. The first and most basic book is Parenting with Love and Logic. It is a must read, but the book on entitlement gives a good overview of the basic tenants of Love and Logic as well as dealing head-on with one of the greatest issues facing parents today - the sense of entitlement that is prevalent in our society.
Raising a Modern Day Knight: A Father's Role in Guiding His Son to Authentic Manhood by Robert Lewis
http://www.amazon.com/Raising-Modern-Day-Knight-Fathers-Authentic/dp/1589973097/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348014422&sr=1-1&keywords=raising+a+modern+day+knight
This is one of my favorite books written especially for dads of little boys. It gives practical advice for dads who desire to raise a son with character, conviction, and vision. The book talks about rites of passage - passed down from father to son.
How to Keep the Little in Your Girl by Dannah Gresh
This book was introduced to me last year by one of those great moms who understands the importance of raising grace-filled daughters who are caught up in a world that wants them to grow up too fast! In fact, this sweet mom had a Bible study for moms, using this book as a resource. Every mother came away changed and with a new perspective. The title says it all...Let's lock arms and help keep the "little" in our girls.

Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours and Have a New Kid by Friday - both books by Dr. Kevin Leman
Dr. Leman gives practical, Christ-focused advice. He uses what he calls "reality disciple" to help parents turn their children's negative behavior around fairly quickly. Dr. Leman is witty. His advice is straight-forward and easy to read and implement.
